- Check indexing, snippet eligibility and the effective AI setting.
- Answer real buying questions with accurate, useful information.
- Eligibility and an observed citation do not guarantee future inclusion.
There is no guaranteed method for getting a small business cited in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. The useful work is to make the intended public pages eligible, publish information that genuinely helps with relevant questions and review the evidence without overstating it.
This guide reflects Google’s documentation checked on 28 September 2026. That date matters because the available controls and reporting have changed. Older advice may describe a different product state.
Check eligibility before rewriting content
Google’s AI optimisation guide says supporting pages need to be indexed, eligible for a search snippet and included in Search generative AI features through Search Console. Eligibility does not guarantee selection.
Ask the maintainer to check the important service and guide pages, not just the homepage. Confirm that restrictions match the business’s intentions. A draft or private page may correctly remain excluded; a public service page accidentally blocked needs a different response.
Keep a record of what was checked, the relevant property and the date. Do not make broad crawler changes because a marketing tool says the site needs to “open to AI” without identifying the actual setting.
Review the Search Console control
Google now documents a Search generative AI control in Search Console settings. Its options include inclusion, exclusion and inheritance from a parent property. Check the effective setting for the property being reviewed.
The control concerns generative search features; it is distinct from model-training controls. Do not use a general noindex directive as if it only affects AI features, because that has a broader search consequence.
Record any change and its business reason. If a property inherits its setting, the explanation should identify the relevant parent rather than assuming the visible website has an independent configuration.
Choose questions the business can answer well
Focus on decisions customers actually face: suitability, preparation, alternatives, cost factors and limitations. Ask the people delivering the service what customers commonly misunderstand and what information helps them make a better choice.
A useful page might compare two approaches to a project using real operational knowledge. Explain the conditions in which each option fits, the information needed to assess the job and the boundaries of the advice. Avoid presenting a generic summary as unique expertise.
Do not invent a completed project or outcome to make a guide look authoritative. Original value can come from a carefully explained process, a decision worksheet or a transparent example, provided the reader knows what it represents.
Make the source material clear and coherent
Use a descriptive title, headings that reflect the reader’s questions and links to the relevant service. Put the direct answer near the question, then explain the conditions and exceptions. Clarity helps readers assess the answer without stripping away important context.
Google’s guidance does not require special AI-only files or a particular word count. Its emphasis on useful original material is more relevant than adding repetitive answer blocks. Do not split one coherent explanation into dozens of near-identical pages just to cover variations of a phrase.
An illustrative example: a service page could explain what a site survey establishes, what it cannot confirm remotely and which information a customer should prepare. That is a useful resource regardless of whether an AI result later links to it.
Use a practical readiness review
| Area | Question to answer | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Can the intended page be indexed and used as a snippet source? | URL checks and final page settings |
| Control | Is the relevant property included or inheriting inclusion? | Property and effective setting |
| Content | Does the page answer a real decision with accurate detail? | Approved facts and editorial review |
| Evidence | Are examples, credentials and claims genuine? | Permissions and source records |
| Journey | Can a reader continue to the relevant service or contact route? | A tested path through the site |
This checklist is a business review framework, not a prediction of Google’s selection. Passing it establishes that the work is coherent and intentional.
Measure the right outcome
Google’s generative AI performance report reports impressions for links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Read the report’s definition and availability notes rather than assuming it is an AI conversion dashboard.
Keep visibility, visits and qualified enquiries separate. A citation can be useful evidence of discovery, but it does not show that the customer clicked or chose the business. Our AI measurement guide provides a worksheet for combining these observations carefully.
Make improvements that remain useful
Maintain service facts and review important guides when the underlying information changes. If an answer is wrong or outdated, correct the source page and record the change. Do not keep publishing variations merely because a single test did not produce a citation.
Explore AI search visibility for your business when you want a defined review of the content, access and evidence. The aim is to make the business easier to understand and assess, with honest limits on what any supplier can promise.
