- Keep mentions, citations, impressions and visits separate.
- Use current first-party reporting alongside labelled observations.
- A sampled inclusion rate is not a share of the whole market.
AI search visibility is not one number. A business can be mentioned without a link, cited without receiving a visit, or visited without receiving a suitable enquiry. A useful report keeps those events separate and explains where each observation came from.
For a small business, the aim is to learn whether relevant discovery is improving and whether it contributes to useful customer journeys. This guide provides a measurement worksheet using current platform guidance checked on 28 September 2026.
Define the events before counting them
| Event | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Mention | The business name appeared in an observed answer | The website was cited or visited |
| Citation | An answer linked to a particular source | The person followed the link |
| Impression | A platform recorded a qualifying appearance | A visit or commercial outcome |
| Referral visit | A visit was attributed to a source | The visitor was a suitable prospect |
| Qualified enquiry | A request met the business’s agreed criteria | The complete history of the customer’s discovery |
Do not add these counts together. One customer journey may produce several of them, and different systems may observe different parts of it. Keep the definitions beside the dashboard rather than relying on a label such as “AI reach”.
Use Google’s current reporting carefully
Google documents a generative AI performance report for Search. It reports impressions for links shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, device and date dimensions. The chart and table may aggregate differently.
The report is an impression view, not a standalone AI enquiry report. Google’s documentation also explains that availability can depend on factors including sufficient impressions. A missing report should not be recorded as proof of zero visibility.
Record the property, dates, filters and export date. Compare like-for-like views and note preliminary data. Use the Google AI eligibility guide if the report raises questions about inclusion settings or the pages being considered.
Track ChatGPT referrals where observable
OpenAI’s publisher FAQ states that ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Check how your analytics system records that source and which pages receive those visits.
Follow the journey only as far as the available data supports. A tracked form completion may be useful, but verify whether it represents a delivered message and whether the request fits the business. Where attribution is missing, record it as unknown.
Do not claim that every direct visit or unexplained enquiry came from AI. Customers may discover a business in one place and return another way. A simple optional “How did you hear about us?” question can add context, but the answer is self-reported rather than a complete technical record.
Build a controlled question sample
Manual observation can help assess whether answers describe the business accurately. Choose a small set of questions tied to real buying decisions and keep the wording stable for a review period.
Include discovery, comparison, suitability and specialist-information questions. Record the exact prompt, platform, date, relevant location context, whether search was used where observable, the cited URLs and the accuracy of the answer.
Treat each result as a sample. Different sessions and contexts may produce different answers. Do not repeatedly reword a prompt until the business appears and then report only that favourable result. Keep misses and incorrect descriptions in the record too.
Use a worksheet that leads to action
For each observation, record the business question, evidence source, result, limitation and next action. An example row might read: “Service comparison question; manual sample; competitor cited and our service misunderstood; one observation only; review whether our comparison page explains the distinction.”
Another might read: “ChatGPT referrals; analytics; visits to the preparation guide; enquiry attribution incomplete; verify the contact journey and improve the onward service link.” Neither row claims that a content change will force future inclusion.
Assign ownership. The business should verify service facts, the website maintainer should investigate access or tracking issues and the content owner should review unclear explanations. A dashboard without an action owner rarely improves the source material.
Avoid misleading visibility scores
If a tool reports a percentage, ask what forms the denominator. Is it the number of sampled prompts, generated answers, citations or competitors? Which platforms, dates and geographic contexts are included? Can the result be reproduced?
An invented example: appearing in six of twenty sampled answers gives a 30% sample inclusion rate. It does not mean the business has 30% of the AI search market. The question set may be narrow, results may vary and the sample may not represent actual customers.
Keep paid-tool estimates separate from first-party platform data and direct observations. Differences between them can be useful investigative clues, but they should not be silently combined into a single authoritative figure.
Review value as well as visibility
Look at whether the cited pages help visitors understand the service and reach the right next step. Check whether enquiries are suitable and whether inaccurate descriptions recur. A rise in appearances for irrelevant questions may be less valuable than a few well-matched visits.
Keep a dated record of content and technical changes, then compare later observations with appropriate caution. Correlation does not establish that one change caused an AI system to select the page.
